Who I am
My name is Enoch Burke. I am a history and politics graduate, a teacher and a Christian. I have lived and worked in Ireland, in the Midlands-North-West region all my life.
Government exists to protect and advance the welfare of the people. Public representatives should, simply, represent the public’s best interests. The institutions of a country should further the flourishing of its citizens.
As an Irish citizen, I have observed the ministerial career of Katherine Zappone with dismay. Her push to criminalise “homophobia” threatens to define expression of the Christian belief on marriage as a “hate crime”. As a teacher, I have felt the chill of the legislation she commenced, with its negative impact on parents, teachers and school ethos.
There is a Scripture that says, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20). In my estimation, Zappone’s policies have embittered our society. The weakening of parents and the push for hate crime laws are only two cases in point. This website provides details of many more.
Katherine Zappone, as she drafts policy informed by her fervent religious beliefs, is, in my opinion, a danger in any cabinet position. In such circumstances, I cannot be silent. As Pastor Martin Niemoller declared, to be silent in such circumstances is to risk, not just others’ God-given freedoms but, eventually, our very own.
This is a risk not worth taking. Thank you for reading and I encourage you to vote wisely on February 8.
